3 Myths about SPF

1.     Myth: SPF 30 is twice as effective as  SPF 15.

Fact: SPF ratings are confusing. Here is a more accurate picture:

SPF 45 Protects you from about 98% of UVB Rays*

SPF 30 Protects you from about 97% of UVB Rays*

SPF 15 protects you from about 93% of UVB rays*

*For two hours. After two hours, the percentage of protection slowly diminishes.

We recommend using at least an SPF 30 every morning as your base for the day. Try Sheer Tint SPF 45 by PCA Skin or Solar Defense Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 by Hydropeptide for a light tint.

2.     Myth: After I apply my SPF in the morning, I’m good to go all day.

Fact: The protection from your SPF slowly diminishes throughout the day. By the time you get to your 5pm happy hour, for example, you may only have 20% protection or less leftover from your morning application! Reapply every 2 hours, or at least once before a commute or outdoor exposure.

We love Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Sheild SPF 50 for easy reapplications throughout the day!

3.     Myth: Those with acne-prone or oily skin will break out with SPF use.

Fact: Not all SPF’s are created equal! Ask a Grove and Kane esthetician for a recommendation appropriate for your skin type. We love PCA’s Weightless Protection SPF 45 for oily and acne-prone skin.
